Our political wish list needs to include quality candidates for Parliamentary and State Legislative Assembly seats. Quality needs to mean, at least, the candidates are exemplary in terms of their commitment to our political values. The candidates themselves need to be characterised by at least, the following features: 1) They are righteous; 2) They are wise; and 3) They are resourceful.
It is therefore vital for political parties -- who will sponsor those candidates -- to present to the electorate their probable candidates now and all the time so that they may be recognised, and their purported qualities "tested" and verified. There is no need to wait until the run-up to the voting day; it could prove too late for effective selection by the electorate. Well, that is the job of information wings of political parties, right? And the media, please do an honest and effective job of the desired reporting. We don't want the electorate to choose candidates on the basis of lies and ignorance, do we?
The interesting part is the "testing" of the candidates' purported qualities. The job could well be done by journalists and their editors. And it could be adversarial -- and "ugly". However, wise men and women would need some form of verification in terms of veracity of facts on which the candidates will be evaluated. That includes relevancy, accuracy and sufficiency. That's why we could use professional journalists who are themselves righteous, wise and resourceful.
